Huckleberries: Keep ear out for Haugen’s comeback

And to think I heard about this while blogging on Sherman Avenue: Dick Haugen, the Voice of North Idaho emeritus, landed on his feet after his rude dismissal by KXLY/KVNI. Dick dropped by Doma with North Idaho College athletic director Al Williams in tow Wednesday morning to say he’s doing the 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. show on KGA (1510 AM) with Larry Weir, announcer for Eastern Washington University and the Spokane Shock. Dick and Larry are the warm-up act for ex-LAPD detective-turned-broadcaster Mark Fuhrman. Dick’s responsible for North Idaho coverage and promises to tap his many local contacts for interview material … BTW, AD Williams offered several excuses for not turning in his story on time for the current NIC Sentinel edition (Huckleberries, Wednesday): The assignment wasn’t that good (“What do you plan to do during the spring break?”), said the college journalism wannabe. Also, he was distracted by NCAA March Madness. Finally, he said the assignment simply slipped his mind. However, Al assured your Huckleberry Hound, he’s a good writer and will prove it in the next edition. Stay tuned … Not only is the Boundary County Property Owners Association out of whack re: the need for education spending, but it’s culturally clueless, too. In their unsuccessful attempt to defeat their district’s $1.7M, two-year levy, the BCPOAers circulated a flier with the message: “Even Ray Charles could see that this M&O Levy is not a ‘Bare Bones Budget.’ ” The BCPOA is the poster child re: the need for public education.
