HUCKLEBERRIES: Ice cream and salsa recipe for carrot top

Pregnant women shouldn’t go shopping when they’re hungry. So sez a pregnant local kindergarten teacher who writes the blog A Butterfly Moment. She violated her hungry-and-pregnant principle during a recent trip to the supermarket and bought a huge jar of dill pickles, Johnsonville Beddar Cheddar hot dogs and the expensive buns, a Cheddar-and-bacon cheese ball, and a pound of Monterey Jack cheese. She did, however, resist the coconut cake, tortilla chips and cheese dip. Barely. Curious, I asked other female commenters at Huckleberries Online about odd food cravings during pregnancies. They replied:

“ Cis: “1960 … medium-size bowl of vanilla ice cream with lots of salsa on top … for lunch every day at a Mexican restaurant in San Diego … and she turned out a redhead. None of the other kids are.”

“ Katrina: “Guacamole. Had to be fresh. Had to be made from scratch. Had to be brought home to me in half gallons with giant bags of tortilla chips.”

“ Taryn Hecker: “Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream. I ate so much that I can’t eat it any more. Blech.”

“ JournoMom: “Chocolate milk shakes from McDonald’s. No other milk shake would do, no matter how high-end, gourmet or frou-frou.”

“ Kendramama: “I went in phases, eating each thing for days while my husband shook his head and marveled at my newfound capacity for food.”

“ CindyH: “1992 … midnight … must have smoked salmon or I will die. Hubby treks all over town. Finds ‘kippered salmon’ at Tidyman’s. Ewww. Not sure what kippered means, but it sure isn’t the same as smoked. Sigh. A few months later I gave birth to a 10 lb 6 oz son. Should have craved leafy greens.”
