Shawn Vestal: The Falls
One of the things about Your Sexy Government: On occasion, it will stoop way down to kiss your fanny.
That’s what’s happening now with Gov. Chris Gregoire’s call for a special legislative session to reinstate the 1 percent property tax cap, which was thrown out by a court earlier this month. Rather than wait until January, says Gregoire, lawmakers must get together immediately and put that cap back in place.
Otherwise – what? Local governments will get out the cigars and champagne, apparently. The state must intervene, noisily.
This isn’t about Your Sexy Government, really. It’s about YSG’s dimwitted cousin, politics. Gregoire and Dino Rossi are trying to outshine each other on tax hatred. No candidate ever lost a vote pandering about taxes.
It would be nice if lawmakers fixed the inequity in the tax cap, which grants disproportionate “relief” to wealthy property owners over average homeowners.
But the state would survive if they waited and did it in January. Keep in mind what the Spokane City Council did just Monday night: It voted to lower property taxes. And all without a special session.
