Statesman: Resignation “Bow to Political Pragmatism

Whatever motivated the Republicans’ defections, Craig’s expected retirement is, as much as anything, a bow to political pragmatism. With a growing cadre of critics within his own party, Craig can no longer expect to represent Idaho interests effectively. Craig used to boast that he brought in $2.5 million a week in federal grants to Idaho. That, of course, was before Craig had become a persona non grata within the Senate’s minority party, someone who can wield only limited power for rainmaking and dealmaking. By no means was Craig a blameless victim. He set his own demise into motion/Idaho Statesman.
