Off-duty pay

Editor Steve Smith asked if there has been any fallout from the Sunday story about police pay, noting that there’s usually (negative) feedback about privacy issues. The story (also includes PDF of chart) included a rundown of the top 12 highest-paid police officers from 2003 to 2007.

Investigative reporter Bill Morlin received two emails responding to Sunday’s off-duty police pay story (Bill Morlin and Karen Dorn Steele). They were both positive.

But the question this morning: Should city desk have posted the story as a preview on Saturday evening? The story was ready to be released. Then again, it was a detailed, researched enterprise story and not breaking news. City editor Addy Hatch asked whether people would still buy the newspaper if they had already read the story online. We should have a conversation about this sometime, said Carla Savalli, senior editor for local news.
