Day w/o A Gay Achieves Mixed Results

A sign promoting Day Without a Gay is shown posted in the Castro District in San Francisco today. A daylong strike for which people were encouraged to call in “gay” to work to express support for same-sex marriage is drawing spotty participation. In the gay Castro district, several residents and merchants said Wednesday they endorsed the cause, but they did not think the hastily arranged work stoppage was practical given the poor economy.

Question: Did advocates of gay marriage help themselves or hurt themselves in the court of public opinion by trying to stage a work stoppage with the economy in bad shape?
