10 lines from great sci-fi films

Dan

If the command “Gort! Klaatu barada nikto !” is one of the all-time memorable taglines for a sci-fi film , it’s hardly the only one. Following are few of my favorites.

See if you can guess the origins of each.

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”

“I’m trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You’re the one that has to walk through it.”

“The ship will automatically destruct in ‘T’ minus five minutes.”

“I’ve just picked up a fault in the AE35 unit. It’s going to go 100 percent failure in 72 hours.”

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time… like tears in rain… Time to die.”

“Come with me if you want to live.”

“There’s no emotion. None. Just the pretense of it. The words, the gesture, the tone of voice, everything else is the same, but not the feeling.”

“Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!”

“E.T. phone home.”

“If we’re all ready on the Dark Side of the Moon… play the five tones.”

Below: Patricia Neal utters the command that saves humankind in 1951’s “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
