SteveS: Reflections On A Newspaper Career
I miss that old Register-Guard newsroom. I miss
the smoke. I miss the black ink that covered nearly every surface, the smell of rubber cement and the relentless cacophony of sound. I miss typewriters, and carbon paper and phones with dials. I miss real wire machines with bells that rung when a really big story broke. I miss the swearing and the profane practical jokes that would probably get us arrested today. I’d go back in a heartbeat. Except there never is a going back. All we can do is move forward/

DFO: I began my newspapering in 1970, three years before Steve (because I was working full-time at the local daily while attending college full time). Therefore, I experienced the same changes that Steve did. If you want to know what newspapering was like over the last four decades, his News Is A Conversation post above is a must read.
