“(Mariners’ announce Dave Niehaus) team has acquired pitchers Erik Bedard and Carlos Silva and a new right fielder in Brad Wilkerson. Want to take a guess if Niehaus is fired up about the Mariners’ chances? You’re right, he is. ‘I’m the most excited I’ve been since ‘96,’ he said. ‘Remember when ‘95 was over, when you couldn’t wait to get started again?’ I kidded him about being excited this time of year every year, even during the bad Mariners years, of which there were many. ‘For crying out loud, talk to me in September when we’re 10 games out,’ Niehaus said. ‘But I don’t think that will happen.
