Whatever became of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’?
Roman Polanski may be a criminal. He may be a pervert. He may be a spawn of Satan for all I know. Whatever else he is, though, he’s a hell of a filmmaker. “Chinatown” proves that. As does “The Pianist.”
And so does “Rosemary’s Baby,” Polanski’s 1968 adaptation of Ira Levin ’s novel about a young New York couple who become unwitting dupes of a satanic circle.
If you’re familiar with the film, you might be interested to know about a “Rosemary’s Baby”-themed contest that Moviemaker Magazine is holding. Set up as part of a promotion for the film’s 40th anniversary, the contest is titled “Whatever Happened to Rosemary’s Baby?”
“Ever wonder what became of Rosemary’s demonic spawn?” the contest instructions read. “Did he follow in his father’s footsteps and rise to the top of Hollywood’s A-list? Or did she go into politics and become one of the world’s most recognized leaders? Maybe he or she went down a different path altogether. It’s up to the contestants to decide.”

Here are some ideas:
•Rosemary’s baby became, in true “The Omen” fashion, president of the United States. But in order to appeal to the widest majority of the U.S. voting public, he balanced his rich-boy roots and Yale University education by affecting a good-ol’-boy persona.
•He moved to Russia, adopted a new identity , and got himself elected as premier, becoming the kind of man that the U.S. president would look into the heart of.
•He became a movie star, one whose name is associated both with nonmainstream religious practices and A-list blockbuster projects (though with the occasional artsy effort that ends up being critically acclaimed).
•He became a celebrity magician .
Feel free to use any of the above.
