In the words of Dennis Hopper, ‘Merci,’ man

Dan

So, word comes from Paris that Dennis Hopper has been made a commander in the French Legion of Honour. That’s great news.

I can just imagine his reaction, which might come as one of the following quotes from his many films:

As Billy, from “Easy Rider” : “We did it, man. We did it, we did it. We’re rich, man. We’re retirin’ in Florida now, mister.”

As the photojournalist, from “Apocalypse Now” : “What are they gonna say about him? What are they gonna say? That he was a kind man? That he was a wise man? That he had plans? That he had wisdom? Bulls—t man!”

As Riccardo the bar owner, from “Americano” : “Don’t fall for the con. The Ameri-con.”

As Wilbur “Shooter” Flatch, from “Hoosiers” : “Now, boys, don’t get caught watchin’ the paint dry!”

As Howard Payne, from “Speed” : “This day has been rather disappointing, I don’t mind saying.”

Or, finally, as Frank Booth, from “Blue Velvet,” suggesting the drink to toast his award with: “Pabst Blue Ribbon!”

Below: Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson star with Dennis Hopper, standing all hairy there in the center, in “Easy Rider.”
