CdA, Spokane Near Misery Index Tie
In a “Misery Index” list of the increase in unemployment in 372 metro areas, Coeur d’Alene and Spokane are nearly tied at Nos. 243 and 247, respectively. The Misery Index marks the increase in unemployment reported in February 2009 and 2008. Coeur d’Alene’s jobless rate jumped from 6.0% to 9.4%. Spokane’s from 6.1% to 9.6%. By contrast, Boise-Nampa ranked No. 167; Portland No. 93; Seattle No. 191; Idaho Falls No. 46; Missoula No. 88; and Logan, Utah, No. 9. The lower numbers represent low jobless rates. El Centro, Calif., was worst with an unemployment rate of 24.5%. Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux, La., was best with 3.5%. You can see the rankings here .
