Escapee: Madden Is ‘Really Cool’

So John Madden is retiring. Another old-school famous personality hanging it up. I think John Madden related to his audience so well, for one thing: He was such a CHARACTER. He was just crazy enough to be different, yet he knew what he was talking about all the way. Madden always lent an authoritative, yet folksy and humorous manner to the proceedings. I always thought Madden was Really Cool. I feel a sense of loss here, but then again, I feel that way whenever an old-school TV personality retires…Walter Cronkite…Eric Sevareid…Dandy Don Meredith…I even miss Howard Cosell. … I may be way off-base here, but it seems as if the people who are replacing them are more or less generic, cookie-cutter-type broadcasters/Escapee. Question: What media personality — news, sports, entertainment, etc. — would you hate to see retire?

He was just crazy enough to be different, yet he knew what he was talking about all the way. Madden always lent an authoritative, yet folksy and humorous manner to the proceedings. I always thought Madden was Really Cool.

I feel a sense of loss here, but then again, I feel that way whenever an old-school TV personality retires…Walter Cronkite…Eric Sevareid…Dandy Don Meredith…I even miss Howard Cosell. Ted Koppel Tom Brokaw. I may be way off-base here, but it seems as if the people who are replacing them are more or less generic, cookie-cutter-type broadcasters. I’m still having a hard time getting used to the new ABC “Nightline” format. I can’t remember what network he’s on, but Terry Moran looks like he’s fresh out of Junior High School, f’cryin’ out loud.

Maybe it’s just me getting old. I hate watching the dominoes fall.
