The Clothing Exchange

Andrea Shearer

Usually, when I tire of my clothes and want to recycle them, I chuck them all in a bag and donate them to the local staff (when abroad) or haul it down to the nearest charity (when in the States). But today I was introduced to a new alternative to recycling clothes- the clothing exchange.
The idea is quite simple. Contact all your girlfriends and invite them over, asking them to bring their slightly worn yet still adorable clothes they no longer want. At the appointed time, dump all the clothes in the center of the room and everyone digs in. Take what you want, and at the end of the day whatever’s left over goes to charity.
It’s a great way to unload those clothes that are cute but you just don’t wear, while infusing your wardrobe with some new pieces- for free!
And this is the perfect time of year to exchange. With the spring weather taking over, it’s time to sort out the closet, play keep or toss and get the dresser drawers in order.
The party I went to was a potluck cum strip show. After gorging ourselves on goodies, we rooted through the pile searching for treasures in other people’s rejects. Soon, we were all stripping down to try on our selected stashes, joking about our wobbly bits and laughing at each other’s attempts to slither into those just-too-tight pants. Uh, one rule… no boys allowed.
I left the party having cleared out my closet (the invitation was great motivation), obtained a bag full of ‘new’ clothes and spent a few enjoyable hours with a great group of people. Free clothes and cheap entertainment- now that’s my type of party.
