Gun safety not taboo

The Spokesman-Review

The court decision regarding (April 14) “Split-up parents feud over boy’s shotgun” is wrong.

The mother should be thanking her ex-husband for teaching their son safety instead of using him as a pawn in their divorce. Too many kids learn about firearms from TV or video games. This young man is learning responsibility along with safety, which is what every youngster should learn. Gun safety should not be a taboo subject like sex education was years ago.

We trained this young man. He came to us with an exceptional foundation of safe gun handling that his father taught him. Using the father’s inability to hear is absolute discrimination and should not be tolerated. We know this father, and he is not disabled. He is an involved, loving father spending time with his son.

The article misrepresents the entire issue of access. This young man should not have unsupervised access to firearms and the father agrees with only supervised access. Shame on the mother for taking away an activity her son and his father enjoy together and shame on the court officials who participated in the travesty. Judge Cozza had gun owners’ support in the past but will not in the future.
