U.S. health care not best

The Spokesman-Review

What’s with the guy who doesn’t like socialized medicine (Letters, April 21)? “Best health care system in the world”? Oh please!

The U.S. appears way down the ladder on virtually every measurement of decent health care. We are No. 47 for life expectancy. A bunch of countries with socialized medicine beat us out!

Could perpetual stress and worry about going bankrupt due to medical issues affect people’s health? I’m thinkin’ – yes!

In Socialized-Medicine-land it would be a national scandal if someone was turned out of their home because of illness, but there’s no money in protecting the peace-of-mind of our citizens, so who cares?

How about the infant mortality rate – the number of babies dying before they reach 1 year of age. Wow! The U.S. is 178th out of 223! That seems kinda up-there for the “best health care in the world.”

Our vaunted “free market” has given us the highest health care costs on the planet, yet the miracle of comparative statistics proves we are not getting our money’s worth. Why does anybody believe this “best in the world” balderdash? By virtually any statistical measure, it is not true! Squeezing your eyes closed and wishing does not make it so!
