The Slice: Have you met Granny Smith?

Slice-meister Paul Turner is taking some time off this month, but don’t despair: In his absence, we’re rerunning some of the tastier tidbits from this date in Slice history. Today’s sampling:

FROM 2004:

An untold number of Washington residents have a dirty little secret. They never eat apples.

It’s too bad, really. Because many of these folks swore off the state-symbol fruit after one too many encounters with a mushy red delicious. And today, the apple world offers lots of appealing alternatives.

What’s your favorite?

FROM 2000:

Life in 2000: A reader who described herself as an “old, gray-haired lady” said she could do without having to stare at the stylist’s belly button while getting a perm.

FROM 1998:

There are plenty of bad, bored, burned-out teachers.

But the really good ones – you know who you are – are among the most valuable people in our society.

So here’s a high-five from The Slice.
