SC: 60 Years Since Hell Froze Over

It’s 10 days before winter is supposed to arrive, but since it’s here already I thought it might be instructive to tell you how bad it can get. Sixty years ago, all hell broke loose across south-central Idaho. Folks were snowbound and schools were closed for weeks at a time. Food had to be airdropped to stranded motorists on U.S. Highway 30 in the Magic Valley’s east end. The winter of 1948-49 remains the second-coldest on record, blowing in during first week of January when temperatures fell to minus-8 in Twin Falls and minus-29 in Fairfield. But the second week in January, high winds had closed roads and forced the cancellation of even makeup school days on Saturdays.
