Feds have constitutional limits

The Spokesman-Review

The federal government is obviously attempting to steer the United States towards socialism. Many Americans are frustrated and somewhat stymied as to how to stop this radical change. In our 233-year history we have become the most successful nation in the world’s history, but as Barack Obama so eloquently stated, “people who love this country can change it.” Why?

We can, however, stop this “change.” According to the U.S. Constitution, the federal government has limited powers. All other powers are left to the states and the people. State laws on most any subject can surpass federal mandates. For example, if state law adequately defines health care, the federal government cannot force (e.g.) Obamacare on us. Any attempt to do so must be litigated and courts must declare state law to prevail and federally mandated health care clearly unconstitutional. Period. This principle addresses almost any federal mandate.

Might our state Legislature take such actions or will they support socialism? We must petition legislators and the governor to act as patriots, but the choice is ultimately theirs. I would implore our citizens to frequently write their legislators asking them to enact laws that preclude specific unconstitutional federal dictates.
