Room for many viewpoints
After reading Marcia Girnus’ letter to the editor (Dec. 19), I felt a response was needed. I always look forward to Don Clegg’s column because he offers thought-provoking articles that can appeal to a variety of people.
I understand that Ms. Girnus does not agree with Mr. Clegg. However, it is sad to me that people resort to threats of hell when they disagree with another person’s viewpoint. I try to read all of Mr. Clegg’s columns and have never had the impression that he is egocentric as Ms. Girnus claims. Rather, it seems to me that someone who only wants his/her viewpoint published is exhibiting the egocentrism.
Mr. Clegg’s columns offer thoughts on the values of nonbelievers, people who require no faith and make up about 15 percent of our country’s population. I applaud The Spokesman-Review for publishing articles that appeal to a variety of people and present values from more than one worldview. After all, we live in a world full of people with different beliefs. It would do everyone some good to try to understand other viewpoints instead of trying to suppress them.
