Stop crying ‘tax break’

The Spokesman-Review

I can’t believe it. House and Senate Republicans are still crying “tax break.” They seem to believe the cure for everything except the common cold is a tax break.

One would think that after the Reagan and Bush tax cuts resulting in nearly an $11 trillion debt for our grandchildren to settle, they would realize income has to eventually match outgo. Speaking of children, I’m beginning to believe the first thing a baby born to Republican parents says is not “mama” or “dada” but “tax break, tax break.”

If our children and grandchildren have to shoulder the burden of repaying the huge debt, I would hope the bulk of the package would go to benefit them. This would mean infrastructure such as schools, mass- and rapid-transportation systems as well as repairing highways and bridges, energy systems, electrical grids, sewer and water projects, state and national parks, to name a few.

State universities and Grand Coulee Dam with its irrigation and electrical potential are such examples. They were immediate work for thousands of workers making a living wage, with generations even to this day benefiting. Come on, Republicans, the American people spoke at the last election; get with the program.
