Online options divert mail

The Spokesman-Review

I would like to respond to Doug Clark’s article in regard to the economy affecting demand for postal services (“Extra mile? Sorry, not in the ol’ creed,” Jan. 29).

With technology as it is these days, many people have chosen to receive, or view, their bills, invoices and/or statements online, via the Internet, rather than receiving paper copies in their mailboxes. This “e-statement” option is offered by financial institutions, credit card companies, lending companies, as well as utility companies, in an effort to reduce paper usage and identity theft and become more “green.”

People may also choose to pay their bills via electronic funds transfers which have greatly reduced the number of payments being made via the U.S. Postal Service.

I believe these services are what truly have caused the decline in demand for U.S. postal services.
