Zwick slams the ‘Slumdog’
I read Liz Smith’s farewell New York Post column this morning and was a bit disappointed that she didn’t dish more at the man, Post editor Col Allan . But then I read this item:
“Not everybody is so happy with the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Oscar win. Take director Edward Zwick , who had his own movie ‘Defiance’ in the contest. He says, ‘ “Slumdog” marks a sea change for the movie biz. The big-budget blockbusters are always going to be around, but, as for the more modest and more intelligent films put out by the smaller independents, I’m not so sure. I just hope I am still going to be around after the dust settles, to make movies.’ ”
Zwick, who does have talent, is likely to be around. And so will “ more modest and more intelligent films put out by the smaller independents.” They just need to be better than “Defiance,” which had just as many “big-budget blockbuster” traits about it as “Slumdog” did.
How about that cavalry-to-the-rescue sequence near the end there?
Michael Bay
couldn’t have done that any better.
