Texting from the scene
From Derek Casanovas of the Whitworthian:
8:36 A.M. - Jim, just got to the mall. There was no security checkpoints for us to pass through. People are sprawled across the grass, positioning themselves near monitors.
10:32 A.M. - People are packed in here, gazing at the monitor and bopping along to the tunes of the marine band.
11:05 A.M. - The mall erupts with excitement and cheer as the Obamas and Bushes have arrived. Photographs are being snapped left and right of Obama’s image on the screen.
11:34 A.M. - George W. drew a frosty reception from the crowd, as loud boos were emanating around us.
11:58 A.M. - For the first time today, a hush has fallen over the crowd as they listen to Biden’s swearing in.
11:58 A.M. - Eyes are riveted to the screen, and the crowd listens to every word with rapt attention.
12:05 A.M. - Flags feverishly fly over the crowd, popping up from raised arms upon the announcement of the oath of office.
12:09 A.M. - The roar of the crowd is deafening as Obama takes the podium.
