Fourth merited coverage

The Spokesman-Review

I love the Fourth of July and eagerly celebrate our nation’s breach-birth while also grieving the shattered lives required to attain and maintain our freedom.

This weekend thousands of people gathered at Riverfront Park to celebrate our country’s 213th birthday.

The Lilac Bowl and its surroundings became a lovely melting pot as folks of all ages, sizes, experiences and roles blended into community. They were stirred with music, history, drama, fun, food and beverages to fry in the sun or simmer in shade. Slightly cooled by the colorful sunset and peppered with patriotism, these well-seasoned families and friends rose in respect and applauded our national anthem.

Glowing in the awesome light of fantastic fireworks, our marvelous mix boomed up to become high-definition Americana!

Eagerly I opened Spokane’s Spokesman on July 5, expecting extended joy from the celebration as I read its review. No mention of our history, birthday, nation or celebration. Not even a nod to neighboring Fairchild Air Force Base. Instead I found three colorful pages of pink fairy dust from Twisp!

For the first time in 30 years I was ashamed of my hometown newspaper.
