Cell phone ban too lenient
I’m an educated, young mother, and I need to stand up for more regulation of driving and cell phone use.
In the past five years, I’ve been immersed in the college world where learning to be independent and protecting personal rights is of the utmost importance. However, the danger that comes with driving and cell phone use outweighs my personal agenda and individuality.
The state of Washington currently has a ban on cell phone use while driving, including talking and texting. However, it’s only a secondary offense. To protect our families, especially our children, we need to make it a primary offense.
I suspect most of us have talked or texted while driving, but we need a reality check. Cars are weapons! How would any of us feel if we caused a fatal accident while texting? In the last two weeks, I have been run off the freeway three times by drivers obviously distracted by their mobile device. Each time, my toddler was along for the ride.
It’s time to start thinking more about driving when we’re driving. We need to ban all cell phone use by drivers who cannot afford to be distracted from their primary duty: driving.
