Don’t prosecute victims

The Spokesman-Review

This is the first letter to the editor that I have written but I am concerned about the news of the mother that is being prosecuted for vehicular homicide in the accidental death of her daughter (“Face time,” July 13). When did we become a society that has to find blame for every accident and then feel we must prosecute the victims?

The parents and family of that baby are the only ones who suffered a loss. Why would we prosecute them? Why not just require them to attend a safety class on installing car seats? They have suffered enough. When I read that this is the first prosecution of this kind in the state of Washington, I was ashamed. What a claim! Where is our humanity?

I guess the only way to prevent this kind of frivolous lawsuit is to make sure we don’t elect Spokane County persecutors that initiate these types of lawsuits. When is the next election? Will we remember and vote for prosecutors that actually prosecute criminals and not parents or grandparents that install car seats incorrectly?
