Play ball at schoolyards

Why not get the 3,000 kids and their parents together and work to get the baseball fields already at the schools in their neighborhoods in top condition (“Youth baseball solution critical,” Letters, July 18)? After all, it is our tax dollars that put them there; they should be used.

It would also take care of the problem of “the kids being more sedentary.” What a wonderful feeling of accomplishment to be able to say, “We did this.” They would start out as winners.

As for health hazards, what could be worse then letting the kids play on a Superfund dump site that supposedly would become very dangerous when watered, not only to those on the fields but to our aquifer and those down from the property where water would eventually go?

It is no surprise some want “first-class ballparks” to go along with their first-class cell phones, cameras, iPods, etc. What would they have to look forward to in the future if they have it all now? Some of our very famous ball players grew up using vacant lots and paved streets and were happy to have a ball and a bat.
