Targeting rich unjustified

The Spokesman-Review

When I hear the calls for universal health care, I can only think one thing: Why? We have, undoubtedly, the best health care coverage in the world. While not everyone is insured, everyone has access to health care.

People come here to the U.S. more often than Americans go to foreign nations. It sickens me when I hear the Democrats in Congress calling for reform and offering to tax the rich as an end-all solution. It is under no circumstances the responsibility of any American, rich or poor, to pay for someone else’s health care.

The American dream is slipping through the grasp of those who care, and we are seeing a change in philosophy never seen before. What happened to working for something, having the knowledge that you earned it rather than being handed something from the government?

There are issues with our health care system, however. Rising medical and prescription drug costs are the real problem. We must work to lower these costs to achieve true health care reform. The American dream doesn’t entitle you to anything but life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; it is up to you to make your American dream, not the government.
