DVD week is somewhat ‘Inglorious’
Aside from the usual releases, among them “Fast & Furious,” the week boasts a number of intriguing DVD views. Here are just a few:
“Angel of Death”: Anyone who remembers Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 movie “Death Proof” knows the name Zoe Bell. She’s the New Zealand stunt actor who seemingly spends half that movie on the hood of Kurt Russell’s 1970 Chevy Nova. In this action flick, Bell plays an assassin who becomes haunted by her victims and ends up seeking out vengeance in their name. Sounds like a great Friday-night view. BTW, it’s rated R for “disturbing violent content, aberrant sexuality, nudity and language.”
“Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series”: Some critics, not to mention fans, dubbed this remake of the cheesy 1960s-era sci-fi show one of the best shows on television. Now’s your chance to see the whole series and make up your own mind.
“Fast & Furious”: Vin Diesel returns for this high-octane extension of the series that features muscle cars and relentless action. Not to mention Paul Walker’s crooked grin and Diesel’s mumble-thumb charisma.
“Inglorious Bastards”: This film, released originally in 1978, is the basis for Quentin Tarantino’s remake (titled “Inglourious Basterds,” misspellings intended), which comes to theaters Aug. 21. Directed by Italian director Enzo Castellari, it tells the story of a group of American soldiers who are shanghaied into performing a World War II suicide mission. IMDB.com describes it as “perhaps the biggest was movie in EuroCult history.” Whatever that means.
“Repulsion”: Roman Polanski’s 1965 film, starring Catherine Deneuve, tells the story of a woman’s descent into madness. Re-released through Criterion, it boasts a bunch of extras, not to mention Criterion’s typically good digital transfer.
Happy viewing.
