Let’s remember victims

The Spokesman-Review

John Geurin’s letter (“Cars held for ransom,” June 4), referring to the May 31 article by Jody Lawrence-Turner, was somewhat troubling and inaccurate. I do not believe vehicles can be impounded in driving infraction cases as stated.

Rather, it is in driving criminal offenses, such as driving while license suspended, that such occurs. And oftentimes, the reason for the suspension is for failure to pay previous tickets, among other things.

So regarding that and the so-called debtor’s prison, should society just forget about victims’ rights to restitution, fines imposed by courts and all the other lawless acts continually carried out by people who apparently think they are exempt from the rules governing the rest of us?

I’m open to suggestion, but only by those who have been victimized and are out a lot of money because of some sociopathic subject who could care less about their loss. Debtor’s prison? OK. And the cops, judges and tow companies having a profitable thing going, and they should be investigated by the FBI as Mr. Geurin states? What do reasonable people, who have been in an accident caused by a suspended driver who has no insurance, really think?
