The wise and all-powerful Dick Cheney would like us all to be afraid, very afraid. I am reminded of the following passage from Samuel Butler’s novel “The Way of All Flesh” (1903):

“The man to fear is he who goes at things with the cocksureness of pushing vulgarity and self-conceit.”
