No studs, no problem
I can’t say it often enough: you don’t need studded tires to go up and down the South Hill or through flat intersections that are glazed over by incompetent drivers sliding up to stop lights and then peeling out went they can’t get traction.
In my working years I went up and down the South Hill twice daily every working day for four years. I don’t drive an SUV, I don’t have four-wheel drive and I don’t have studded tires. My car is a compact, front-wheel-drive car. My tires are all-weather radials.
I understand that the Idaho State Patrol gives classes in wintertime driving every year before the snow flies. I think these classes are free. It’s a shame more folks in these parts don’t take advantage of their expertise.
Drivers using studs tear up the streets every day they drive of the five months that studs are allowed, just on the odd chance that studs might help one or two days a year. What a bargain!
