Stud damage unmistakable

The Spokesman-Review

I have to take issue with Mr. Mulligan (“Tell the truth about studs,” Letters, March 1) as to the destructiveness of steel studs in tires. I’m afraid you are living in la-la land if you don’t think studs destroy road surfaces.

I recently made a trip to South Dakota via Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana’s Interstate 90. Upon entering South Dakota, I found their roads so much smoother and un-rutted, (they banned studs years ago) especially unlike our I-90 passing the Altamont Street area.

Take a small trip west on I-90, up the rutted Sunset Hill and farther; take note how the “ruts” lessen after the exit to Eastern Washington University at Cheney – not a wonder, as all the Spokane residents who go to school there exit with their studs, and not the big rigs as you propose to being the culprits to the devastation to the “inferior” asphalt used – what a joke. South Hill residents live up there because they want to, not because they have to. Get a grip.
