Service won’t be forgotten
In memoriam: Rest in peace, Jack and Walt. During our World War II training at Camp Butner, etc., we became quite close and understood our innermost feelings.
Our mission, as forward observers for our military battery, was to give fire support to the infantry. It made for some sticky situations.
I never had to tell the two of you more than once to load up and head into action. Some thought of you as gung-ho. I thought of you as men of action and pride.
This month, as usual, Memorial Day is set aside to honor those who gave their lives for their country. For many veterans, myself included, this day brings together the survivors and those who died, bound together forever in the cause of freedom.
But the patriotic feeling, the pride and thanks for a free democracy are being attacked from many quarters. The morality of the nation suffers more every day. More and more rotten apples are in this food basket of the world. Too many countries that are free today because of your sacrifice now call us “the bad guys.”
I salute you and will never forget you. For me every day is Memorial Day.
