Fire bond extras add up

The Spokesman-Review

On the surface, the fire bond sounds like a good thing. Who can argue the need for updating equipment and facilities to protect Spokane citizens?

But when you look at the fine print of how the money is being spent, you have to wonder about their priorities. It sounds like they are in the mode of, “if we’re going to ask, let’s get as much as we can.”

With the current economic climate, and belt tightening in all Spokane households, $6.1 million for “miscellaneous equipment,” to include a “driver training simulator,” seems excessive. Few of us could jump into a firetruck and drive without a hitch, but purchasing a driver training simulator is over the top.

I expect the bond to pass, so all I can hope for is that our City Council will show some fiscal responsibility in how those bond funds are spent.
