The Slice: Maybe it’s time Krusty the Clown moisturized

Maybe it’s just me.

But does dry skin season ever prompt you to hum the short “Itchy and Scratchy Show” theme from “The Simpsons”?

Pet peeve: It bugs Jerry Hilton that many drivers around here wait until they are actually turning before flipping on their signals.

Childlike faith in technology: During a family visit, Carol Woodward found herself using her iPhone to look up seemingly everything from football scores to restaurant locations.

At some point during the visit, Woodward lost a sweater. Retracing her steps failed to produce it. So her 5-year-old granddaughter, Callie, offered a suggestion. “Grandma, ask your iPhone where your sweater is.”

Doing the math: Larry Zimmerman calculates that a friend of his who has been a basketball coach for ages has spent 2 ½ days standing at attention, listening to the national anthem.

A horse of a different color: Those Slice items about the various creative things you can do with horse chestnuts initially baffled Paula Conn, who isn’t originally from around here. She thought that was a euphemism for animal droppings.

Beers our grandfathers drank: “Paul, my Grampa Riedel worked for the Grain Belt Brewery in Minneapolis,” wrote Joe Dion of Coeur d’Alene. “And I’m certain he had a strong sense of product loyalty.”

The best-looking person on TV at 4:30 a.m.: Voting was light. But Michelle Gielan of CBS news and Jennifer Carfagno of The Weather Channel finished in a virtual tie. “The infomercial babe with the awesome front porch” and “That one guy on ESPN” also received votes.

Today’s Slice question: How many Spokane area families intend to build backyard ice rinks this winter?

Write The Slice at P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; fax (509) 459-5098; e-mail pault@spokesman.com. Too bad that the guys who lost their jobs riding shotgun when the stagecoach lines shut down aren’t still around to be hired by Spokane pharmacies.
