Rockwood sale is a positive step

The Spokesman-Review

I read with great interest and enthusiasm of the proposed merger of Deaconess, Valley and Rockwood Clinics in a dynamic, integrated health care system. What an outstanding concept.

Judging from my mother’s recent experiences with Deaconess’ cardiac services, and my own outstanding experience with Rockwood’s bariatric unit, these institutions share a wonderful blend of excellence in health care delivery and compassionate nursing service. This will truly improve accessibility to quality health care throughout the region.

As a former board member for Deaconess and Valley hospital systems, it is both comforting and exciting to see Community Health Systems deliver on their promises. In just one year, there are already over 300 new beds; new, state-of-the-art monitors in operating suites; and their own DaVinci robotic surgery center. They have invested more than $20 million in hard dollars.

They have also recruited 14 new doctors in a region that is short 200 physicians. Their insightful merger talks with Rockwood Clinics confirm their understanding of what community health care is all about.

This will be a very good thing for decades.
