Palouse merits more respect

The Spokesman-Review

A recent article on the Palouse River (“Cleanup of Palouse River murky,” Sept. 26) questioned the value of pollution cleanup, citing a lack of “recreational opportunities.”

Check with S-R outdoors guru Rich Landers on that. He included the Palouse River as a premier canoe and kayak paddling route in his book.

Just because the river has a smaller window for ideal conditions doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of cleanup. Try floating it in June, from our lovely city park, past soaring cliffs teeming with swallows, through breathtaking Eden Valley.

The Palouse has long been an undervalued gem. The real problem is that antiquated laws (non-navigable rivers have no “business” value) have led to lax regulations (rampant cattle grazing).
