Hold officials accountable
Recently we have heard some criticism by elected officials of Initiative 1033, the initiative limiting the rate of increase in general fund revenue by the state of Washington.
The propriety of this criticism is questionable. Both the Washington state Constitution and the United States Constitution state that the government draws its rightful power from the consent of the governed. Therefore, elected officials are employees of the citizenry.
As a former employee and employer, it has long been my belief that an employee has an obligation to stay within the bounds set by the employer and perform the tasks asked by the employer. If unable or unwilling to do so, an employee has an obligation to resign.
This being true, why shouldn’t an elected official have an obligation to live within the budget constraints that the citizenry dictates or resign?
Therefore, I encourage a vote for I-1033 and suggest that we should demand that the elected live up to their responsibility.
