Social justice at stake
As a leader in the faith community, I am guided by my belief that all people deserve to be treated fairly, with compassion, respect and understanding. That’s why I am voting “No” on Initiative 1033 and voting “Approve” on Referendum 71 in November.
These two ballot initiatives greatly impact social justice and equity in all communities in Washington. If Initiative 1033 passes, it would cripple funding for education and health care, leaving our most vulnerable – children and the poor – without the resources they need. Surely we can find it in our hearts to reject this proven failure and instead support adequate funding for critical programs like schools and basic health care.
If Referendum 71 is rejected and the domestic partnership law is not retained, it would leave many Washington families without basic rights. All committed couples that want to care for each other should be able to do so.
We all deal with individual challenges in our daily lives. We look for support and guidance from our faith during our difficult times. Let these same principles guide us as we make decisions about the future of all Washingtonians this fall. It’s the fair and right thing to do.
