McCaslin not suited

The Spokesman-Review

As someone who has long been involved in good government for the county, and especially the Spokane Valley, I was pleased when The Spokesman rejected Bob McCaslin’s bid for election.

It may be legal to serve as a city councilman and state senator, but it is certainly not ethical. This could set a precedent and should be reviewed by the Legislature.

McCaslin’s absentee record in the Legislature – over 100 – has lost his constituents their representation. His excuse – “I only vote on the important ones.” My civics classes taught me, “Every vote is important to everyone – whether you disagree with the subject or not.”

The caucus and floor debate determines a vote. You cannot accomplish that by phone. State legislative duties are year-around if you are serving and listening to your people. City government does not happen in a weekly meeting.

The citizens of Spokane Valley deserve a person who can represent them full time. McCaslin is not the right choice. It is sad that a group or political party cannot produce a viable candidate for such an important part of our state.
