Allow books to stir the mind
I am disappointed with the District 271 school board decision made on Oct. 5 to accept a list of “approved novels” that eliminated four books chosen by our professional teachers. It undermines our educators to allow an ad hoc committee to determine curriculum in our schools.
Life is interesting and wonderful. Life is also violent, sad, disturbing and confusing. I read to learn about people’s lives set in times and places that I will never experience. I may not agree with certain attitudes, language or situations presented in books. Nevertheless, I am enriched through literature.
Students should be exposed to a variety of books that challenge their concepts of right and wrong, justice and personal responsibility.
Life is complex. Thoughtful, directed class discussions can help our children mature without having to necessarily make the same choices or mistakes presented in books. This learning also prepares students for college and social interactions beyond Coeur d’Alene.
My children received a very good education in District 271 before a small, vocal group of parents imposed their viewpoint on the majority. I trust our professional teachers to choose great and perhaps controversial literature for our students.
