Allow access to prisoners

The Spokesman-Review

It was with mixed emotions that I read about the military’s long-sought decision to release information about prisoners held in secret detention facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s a good first step!

However, their refusal to allow the International Red Cross access to them is outrageous, inhumane and illegal under international law. The International Committee of the Red Cross has a charter – recognized by most nations (including our “enemies”) allowing them access to any detention facility anywhere in the world to check on their welfare, supply compassionate aid and relief and act as courier to their families.

Now that their intransigence has come out, it is only a matter of time until the ICRC is given access.
