Attack coming from low road

The Spokesman-Review

We are in the middle of a national educational crisis where just in Spokane one in three youths are dropping out of school, many are not meeting basic academic standards and the achievement gap is widening.

A father of two young students of his own, President Obama recognizes these challenges and is taking time out from two wars, an economic crisis and a raging health care reform debate to remind our children as they return for another school year to value education and stay in school to secure their future.

In response, the right wing “let’s find evil in everything he does” critics have chosen once again to take the low road and turn his speech into a political issue and even encourage parents to keep their children home from school. The educational success of our children should never be a partisan issue and when a sitting president of the United States is criticized for reaching out to our children to share with them that he cares about their education and future, then we are going down a very frightening path.
