TFTN: Guv Should Call Shots @ ITD
For years, this newspaper has editorially championed the independence of the Idaho
Transportation Department - one of two major state agencies whose director is not hired and fired by the governor. Now, we’re not so sure. In July, the Idaho Transportation Board dismissed Director Pam Lowe (pictured). Lowe responded with a tort claim seeking damages for improper termination and gender discrimination. Idaho law says: “The director shall serve at the pleasure of the board and may be removed by the board for inefficiency, neglect of duty, malfeasance or nonfeasance in office.” The board didn’t mention any of those four specific reasons in its decision to fire Lowe. For that reason, Lowe stands a pretty good chance of winning a lawsuit - and a lot of money - from the state/

Question: Should the the ITD board remain independent and continue to hire and fire Transportation directors? Or should the guv fill the position by appointment?
