Couples deserve fairness

The Spokesman-Review

I’m saddened and disappointed that Referendum 71 has made it onto the November ballot. To me the issue is clear: All committed couples that want to care for each other should be able to do so. They should have the protections they need to keep their families safe, especially in times of crisis.

Don’t we all want that for ourselves? Can you imagine how you would feel if a loved one was hurt or ill and you couldn’t help? Or if you couldn’t get the benefits you deserved and relied on in the event that your loved one passed away?

If Referendum 71 isn’t approved, it will be a major step in the wrong direction for all Washington families. All of us should be treated equally and fairly under the law. Approve Referendum 71.
