Summer Parkways in Spokane
As long as Mother Nature keeps cooperating, we’re going to talk summer fun - and the kind of fun that doesn’t require vehicles.
This post is a reminder that there are several local groups, including
Futurewise,
The Lands Council
,
City of Spokane,
Spokane Regional Transportation Council
(SRTC),
Spokane County Commute Trip Reduction
(CTR),
Spokane Regional Health District
(SRHD), and the
YMCA-YWCA
looking at the
feasibility of a Summer Parkways event here in Spokane. But first they need to know where parkways should be and what they should look like. So please take a moment to fill out

PARKing Day
event last Friday that Futurewise Spokane coordinated with participation
from four organizations to draw attention the need for the kinds of
opportunities that programs like Summer Parkways would create. Learn more at the

Summer Parkways involve the closure of streets to vehicular traffic for
a day or portion of a day in favor of walking, bicycling, rolling, and
other non-motorized forms of transportation.Summer Parkways connect
neighborhoods and people: walkers, runners, bikers, seniors, adults,
and children can enjoy car-free neighborhood streets filled with a
variety of activities along the route. To see examples visit the following two videos, and as Kitty Klitzke of Futurewise said in a recent email,
“If these big cities with
heavy traffic can do it, then it should be a cake walk in Spokane!”
