‘Freedom’ unappealing

The Spokesman-Review

When is freedom not free and government intervention good for you? When it is ordained by Republicans.

Our brilliant Republican leadership has passed the Idaho Freedom Act to save us from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Since the federal health care bill doesn’t affect people with health insurance now (except possibly to lower costs) and it eliminates the Medicare “doughnut hole,” the only Idaho residents the Republicans will protect are the irresponsible people who don’t pay for their use of emergency rooms and community clinics. But I get to pay for them through taxes and increased insurance premiums. Not my idea of freedom.

Another assault on our citizens is the Freedom of Conscience bill before the Idaho Senate. This law protects the religious beliefs of health care providers, but not yours. It attacks the most vulnerable of our citizens. The abused and raped 14-year-old girl and the 91-year-old dying man will have their choices ignored. A young girl’s life ruined and the old man not allowed to die in peace. And the individuals who will have the power to do this will share no responsibility and likely no compassion.

Not my idea of freedom.
