The Spokesman-Review

I read Dallas Hawkins’ guest editorial (April 10) about the resolution to study Complete Streets with amusement. I could not help but chuckle and recall Oscar Wilde’s famous quote: “A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

Hawkins seems worried only about price, without equal consideration to value. I want to remind readers and Mr. Hawkins that the resolution adopted by the City Council on April 5 is to study how Complete Streets would apply to Spokane.

Contrary to Hawkins’ focus only on price, the study should consider both price and value. Many other communities, including fiscally conservative ones like Coeur d’Alene, have adopted Complete Streets. I am sure that has happened because they calculated the price and also assessed the value of the investment when it came to attracting and retaining residents, visitors and business. Hopefully Spokane will not be shortsighted (or cynical) and will do the same.
